St. Joseph's was founded in 1851 by the Congregation of the Holy Cross. The men's basketball team competes in the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and has won one NCAA championship, in 2004. They are also known as the "Hawks".

The Hawks play their home games at Hagan Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The arena has a capacity of 3,542.

St. Joseph's has a long and successful history in basketball. They have made 23 NCAA tournament appearances, including four Final Four appearances. They won their only NCAA championship in 2004, when they defeated Oklahoma State 64-62 in overtime.
