Wikipedia - Dumbarton FC
Dumbarton FC is een voetbalclub uit Dumbarton in West Dunbartonshire. De club werd in 1872 opgericht en is daarmee een van de oudste van Schotland. De club was mede stichtend lid van de Scottish Football Association in 1873 en toen een van de grootste van het land. In 1891 werd de club samen met Rangers FC de allereerste Schotse kampioen. Het jaar erna droeg Dumbarton FC als enige de titel.
De club kon echter niet op hoog niveau blijven spelen en speelde in totaal 19 seizoenen in de hoogste klasse. De club was voornamelijk in de 2de klasse actief, geen enkele club speelde vaker in de 2de klasse (65 seizoenen).
In 2000 verhuisde de club naar een andere stadion in de stad. Er kwamen meer toeschouwers en een promotie naar de 3de klasse werd afgedwongen. In 2012 promoveerde de club voor het eerst sinds 1995/96 naar de tweede klasse en hield het daar tot 2018 vol.
Dumbarton speelt zijn thuiswedstrijden op het Dumbarton Football Stadium, ook bekend als The Rock, dat plaats biedt aan ongeveer 2.000 toeschouwers. De traditionele kleuren van de club zijn zwart en wit en hun bijnaam, "The Sons", is afgeleid van de bijnaam van de stad Dumbarton, "The Burgh of the Sons".
De club heeft een rijke geschiedenis en heeft in het verleden succes geboekt in zowel Schotse als Britse competities. Dumbarton won de Scottish Cup in 1883 en was de eerste Schotse club die de Engelse FA Cup won in 1888. De club speelde ook in de hoogste Schotse divisie tussen 1891 en 1910.
De afgelopen jaren is Dumbarton voornamelijk actief geweest in de lagere divisies van het Schotse voetbal. De club won de Schotse Challenge Cup in 2004 en de Scottish League Two-titel in 2012.
Bekende oud-spelers van Dumbarton zijn onder andere James Dolan, John McPherson, John Hendrie en Bobby Lennox. De huidige manager van de club is Jim Duffy, die in 2009 werd aangesteld.
